For those who haven't read The Golden Compass yet, the daemon of a person is a part of that person, like soul, free will... In the world of the Golden Compass that part of a person is a separate entity, in the shape of an animal. For children the daemon still changes shape, depending on mood and necessity. For an adult the daemon settles to his or her final form.
